Budget 2026: Saccawu and GOOD call for fuel-price relief and higher SRD grant

Ahead of Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana’s Medium Term Budget Policy Statement on October 21, the Saccawu union and the GOOD Party are urging measures to ease pressure on households, protect jobs and provide relief from rising fuel prices. Saccawu national spokesperson Sithembele Tshwete said decisions on taxes, fuel levies, electricity, social grants and public services would affect workers’ take-home pay. He warned that rising operating costs and weaker consumer spending could put retail jobs, working hours and conditions under pressure. Saccawu also called for support for local textile and garment manufacturing to protect South African jobs.

EndSARS: ‘Who gave the order?’ — Atiku says APC owes Nigerians answers six years on

Six years after the October 2020 Lekki shooting of protesters, former vice-president Atiku Abubakar is asking who ordered the violence and accusing the APC of failing to provide answers. He also criticises Bola Tinubu’s response at the time, saying it questioned the victims rather than demanding accountability, and argues that the lack of truth has deepened distrust and anger among families and young people. Atiku links the frustration to the cost-of-living crisis, citing petrol at 1,405 naira per litre and an account of a woman who quit her job because her salary no longer covered transport. He says his economic recovery plan would boost local production, support minimum-wage earners and students, and reduce government waste.

DRC-Mines: Tensions Persist in Kolwezi as Angry Miners Protest for a Second Day, Gunfire Heard in the City Center

Artisanal miners have continued protesting for a second day in Kolwezi, in Lualaba province, where barricades, burning tires and attacks on vehicles and businesses were reported, particularly in Luilu. Clashes with security forces took place near Kamoto Copper Company, and gunfire was heard in the city center; the Nouvelle société civile congolaise reported deaths among the miners, but no toll has been confirmed. The protesters oppose inspections and the closure of mineral-processing centers and buying counters, and demand the promised implementation of 33 artisanal mining zones as well as access to sites such as Kamilombe. The unrest follows Monday’s violence, when about ten vehicles, including seven mineral-loaded trucks, were reportedly set on fire.

SDP will scrap bulletproof SUVs and charter flights for officials, Adebayo vows

Prince Adewole Adebayo, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) presidential candidate, has vowed to scrap bulletproof SUVs, charter flights and other luxury perks for public officials if elected. He says public funds spent on such benefits could instead support education, healthcare and infrastructure as families face inflation and declining social services. Adebayo cited more than $300 million spent by 33 states on governors’ offices, government houses and executive travel in six months in mid-2026, as well as nearly N1 trillion regularly earmarked for luxury vehicles and executive renovations. He promised to curb the spending, eliminate unconstitutional vehicle allowances and restructure public finances.
