Since breaking with Ousmane Sonko, Bassirou Diomaye Faye has been accused by Sonko's supporters of betraying him and Pastef, especially because he became president with Sonko’s support. In an interview from the United States, Faye stated that his loyalty is solely to the Nation and his institutional commitment, dismissing claims of betrayal. He emphasized that his oath, taken in April 2024, takes precedence over any political loyalty. The rift between them began to emerge in autumn 2025 after their joint victory in the March 2024 presidential election.
