El Niño Watch: Its Impacts Around the World This Week

A powerful El Niño is worsening rain and flooding in India and Nepal, while drought has affected 78,000 families and caused the loss of more than 75,000 cattle in Bolivia. Cyclone Arnab killed at least three people and prompted nearly 100,000 evacuations in India; Bolivia’s President Rodrigo Paz declared a state of emergency. The phenomenon is also contributing to deadly fires and the spread of dengue in Peru, as well as record October rainfall in Santiago, Chile. The World Bank forecasts food prices will rise 18 percent between 2025 and 2027, while estimates attribute hundreds of thousands of heat-related deaths to El Niño.
