Trump faces private citizens lawsuit over limiting White House media access

A group of private citizens sued Donald Trump’s administration in federal court in New York over restrictions on media outlets covering the White House. The plaintiffs include a human rights advocate, a media watchdog, a history professor, a teacher, a legal journalist and a student journalist, all of whom say they need independent, diverse reporting for their work. New York City teacher Peter Schmidt-Nowara said the restrictions risk depriving his students of crucial information about their government. The suit follows a federal judge’s ruling that barring journalists from CNN, MS NOW and Politico was unconstitutional and an order restoring their access, which the administration continues to fight.

Brazil’s real sinks after Lula’s re-election victory

Brazil’s real fell 12 percent against the US dollar after President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s unexpected re-election, while Bovespa stock index futures dropped nearly 15 percent. Trading on Brazil’s stock exchange was halted for 30 minutes after the Bovespa index fell 10 percent, triggering a circuit breaker. Rachel Ziemba said right-wing candidate Flavio Bolsonaro’s refusal to concede had added to financial uncertainty, although Lula’s margin of victory suggested the result would stand. Interest rate futures rose 3.1 percent after Lula’s win, after investors had previously expected tighter fiscal policy under Bolsonaro.

At a press conference on October 26, 2026, Aminata Touré criticized Pastef lawmakers for refusing to pass the supplementary finance bill (LFR). She said its rejection would prevent the state from authorizing 2,505 billion FCFA in commitments and accessing 1,590 billion FCFA in payment credits. Touré cited 300 billion FCFA in planned arrears payments to private businesses, which employ about 336,000 people, and an additional 35 billion FCFA for family safety grants benefiting 1,646,000 families.
