South Africa has set a goal to reduce road fatalities by 50% by 2030, with Transport Minister Barbara Creecy and Deputy Minister Mkhuleko Hlengwa outlining road safety and public transport priorities during Transport Month. The new strategy, based on a 'safe system' approach, focuses on safer roads, vehicles, speeds, enforcement, and post-crash response. Road deaths declined by 6.2% in 2025 and a further 9% reduction was observed from January to August 2026 compared to the same period in 2025. The government is also pursuing legislation to implement a zero alcohol limit for drivers.
