Photos: French protests over school conditions swell

Tens of thousands of people across France joined protests in support of high school students striking over poor classroom conditions, challenging President Emmanuel Macron. The Interior Ministry reported 161,500 participants on Tuesday, more than doubling the 71,500 on Thursday, with unions estimating a total of 480,000 nationwide. While most protests remained peaceful, violence broke out in Paris and other cities, with 41,500 protesters in Paris and 147 teachers injured, according to the Education Ministry. The protests were fueled by perceived heavy-handed police responses to student blockades demanding better educational conditions.
