More than 500,000 people marched across France on Saturday over rising living costs and declining public services, extending a month-long student protest movement. Demonstrations erupted into riots, with shops looted, buildings set on fire and police attacked; Limoges’s 143-year-old town hall was largely destroyed in an arson attack. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez reported more than 2,000 arrests and over 600 injured police officers, firefighters and gendarmes; one protester died of cardiac arrest in Paris. Protests resumed in the capital ahead of Emmanuel Macron’s expected address to the nation at 8pm.
