McKenzie exits VAR project as Safa accounts for R20m budget

Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie announced he is no longer involved in the VAR rollout, having handed over responsibilities to Safa. Safa submitted a detailed report in September 2026 explaining delays caused by governance reviews, technical assessments, and financial accountability. The department decided to proceed with the project under stricter governance controls while maintaining the R20 million funding. The implementation of VAR for the 2026/27 season remains on track according to Safa.
