The death toll from the twin 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes that struck Venezuela on June 24 has risen to at least 3,889, according to a report from National Assembly chief Jorge Rodriguez. Nearly 17,000 people were injured and 18,000 lost their homes. The United Nations launched an urgent appeal for $300 million in recovery funds, while interim leader Delcy Rodriguez called for the release of Venezuelan assets frozen abroad. In the hardest-hit coastal area of La Guaira, over 800 buildings were damaged and 190 collapsed entirely.
