Guinea: Opposition figure and former Prime Minister dies in Paris

Sidya Touré, former Prime Minister and prominent opposition leader in Guinea, died at age 81 in Paris, where he had been hospitalized for two weeks after falling ill in Abidjan. He led the Union of Republican Forces (UFR), one of the main opposition parties, which was dissolved in March during a crackdown on civil liberties by Mamady Doumbouya. Touré had been living in exile in Ivory Coast since the September 2021 military coup that brought Doumbouya to power, and did not participate in the December presidential election in which Doumbouya was elected president.
