German Chancellor Friedrich Merz officially ended the SCAF (Future Combat Air System) program on June 8, 2026, a joint combat aircraft project between France, Germany, and Spain. The decision was communicated to Emmanuel Macron on June 6 on the sidelines of the EU-Western Balkans summit in Montenegro. The program had been paralyzed by industrial rivalries between Airbus and Dassault and differing operational requirements. Dassault will now independently develop France's sixth-generation fighter, while other pillars like the tactical cloud remain pending.
