On September 4, 2026, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the resolution 'Correct the Map', supported by Togo and the African Union, aimed at improving the cartographic representation of Africa. This resolution, which received 164 votes in favor and one against, encourages the use of equal-area map projections, such as the Equal Earth projection. The new representation shows Africa more proportionally, while territories at higher latitudes appear smaller. The United States voted against it, labeling the initiative as ideological.
