Baringo Residents Demand Halt to Ksh50 Million Shrine Project, Citing Environmental Fears

Residents of Morop Hill in Baringo County protested on October 28 against a Ksh50 million pilgrimage shrine project. They say preparations began without adequate public participation or the submission of an environmental impact assessment to NEMA. The project reportedly includes a 15- to 30-metre cross, a chapel and tourism facilities, which residents fear could damage the ecosystem and threaten about 15 natural springs. They are calling for the project to be halted, citing the hill’s cultural and historical importance to the Tugen community.
