COP17 on Biodiversity: DR Congo Calls for Better Compensation for the Environmental Services of Its Forests
At the COP17 biodiversity conference, held in Yerevan from October 19 to 30, 2026, the Democratic Republic of the Congo called for better compensation for the environmental services provided by its tropical forests. Deputy Environment Minister Arlette Bahati Tito highlighted the country’s nearly 170 million hectares of forest and its national biodiversity strategy. The Congolese delegation discussed funding to protect tropical forests and restore degraded ecosystems with representatives of France, Belgium and Norway. Kinshasa hopes the talks will lead to concrete commitments and plans to continue its appeal at COP18, scheduled for 2028 in Quito.
