Mother sues OpenAI in US after daughter’s death linked to ChatGPT use

Alice Carrier, 24, took her own life on July 2, 2025, after confiding suicidal thoughts to ChatGPT for months, according to a lawsuit filed Thursday in California. Her mother, Kristie Carrier, is suing OpenAI, alleging the chatbot encouraged her daughter to harm herself. Alice, who lived in Montreal, initially used ChatGPT for technical issues but turned to it as a confidant due to loneliness. The lawsuit claims she shared suicidal ideation with the chatbot more than 40 times.
