ONATRA turns to rail to reduce heavy truck traffic between Matadi and Kinshasa

ONATRA is rehabilitating the railway between Matadi and the dry port of Kenge, where a rail-laying machine arrived on November 3, 2026, to speed up the work. The project will transport containers by train from Matadi’s MGT port to Kenge, about 30 kilometres away. Jean-Claude Ngoma Moussa, the deputy director of railways in Matadi, said the work includes replacing rails and rehabilitating structures to ensure safe train operations. Goods will then be distributed by road from Kenge to Kinshasa and other destinations, with the aim of reducing heavy truck traffic on National Road 1 and in Matadi.
