More than 500 people ill in South Africa as water quality questioned

More than 500 people in two regions of South Africa have received treatment for gastrointestinal illnesses. East of Pretoria, 408 residents, mainly children under four, suffered diarrhoea and abdominal pain after a treatment plant distributed unchlorinated water for nearly three weeks; the water also came from a river polluted by sewage. Residents have been told not to drink tap water or use it for household needs, even after boiling, while water tankers and aid organizations provide safe supplies. At least 111 Rhodes University students in the Eastern Cape were also treated, and political parties are demanding resignations after an investigation found municipal services had not warned residents of the health risk.

DA opens criminal case after 408 fall ill in Tshwane water crisis

The Democratic Alliance (DA) opened a criminal case after 408 people in Bronkhorstspruit and surrounding communities reported gastrointestinal illness between October 7 and 18. South Africa’s Department of Water and Sanitation found that the Bronkhorstspruit treatment works operated without chlorination from September 24 to October 14 because of problems with the chlorine supplier; most reported cases involved children under four. Tests found high levels of E. coli and coliforms in the water, while patient samples detected norovirus, Campylobacter and Shigella; no deaths had been reported. WaterCAN called for an immediate inquiry and accountability, and the municipality faced criticism for failing to warn residents that the water was unsafe for drinking and household use.

HIV/AIDS response: Togo nears «95-95-95» targets, says UNAIDS

In Togo, 94% of people living with HIV know their status, 93% are receiving treatment and 85% of treated patients have achieved viral suppression, according to Christian Mouala, UNAIDS’ multi-country director. Received on October 21, 2026, by National Assembly President Selom Klassou, Mouala said the country was nearing the international «95-95-95» targets and could eliminate HIV as a public health threat by 2030. He called for stronger efforts to prevent mother-to-child transmission and to reach young people aged 15 to 24. UNAIDS and the National Assembly are also considering ways to strengthen parliamentarians’ capacity and support for prevention and care programs and response budgets.
