The Sahel and the UN: a smaller footprint, a different role

The UN peacekeeping mission in Mali, MINUSMA, was established in 2013 and terminated in June 2023 at the request of Mali's transitional government. Despite the end of this mission, the UN continues its engagement in the region through the UN Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS), focusing on diplomacy and humanitarian assistance. Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger formally left ECOWAS on January 29, 2025, and are deepening cooperation through the Alliance of Sahel States, emphasizing sovereignty and strategic autonomy.
