In Somerset West, near Cape Town, Lourens Kruger and his son Dylan relocated a colony of about 40,000 bees from a concrete garden structure rather than having it destroyed. Since 2018, their organization, Cape Honeybee Conservancy, has rehoused more than 250 colonies found in homes, ceilings, walls and trees. The work addresses residents’ concerns about stings, which can sometimes be fatal to animals. Researcher Mike Allsopp notes that many colonies live near homes for decades without being noticed or disturbing residents.
