President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s remarks upend all expectations

In a televised interview, Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye set aside pressing questions about the supplementary finance bill, strikes planned for October 21–23, and tensions with Pastef. Instead, he spoke about sport, youth and Africa, opening with a childhood memory of watching Carl Lewis and Mike Powell and arguing that Africa should have a permanent seat on the UN Security Council. With the Youth Olympic Games due to open in ten days, he also answered a question about budget adjustment by focusing on the Games’ economic benefits. Some political figures and unions were disappointed that he offered no signal on implementing signed agreements, while others saw his approach as an effort to lift the debate above immediate tensions.

APC claims opposition parties are backing Tinubu’s re-election

APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda said in Abuja that the PDP, APGA and Accord Party were backing Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027. He made the claim after meeting the president to brief him on preparations for the APC presidential campaign. The PDP denied supporting Tinubu, reaffirmed its opposition to the APC-led federal government and said any opposition alliance should unite opposition parties rather than work with the ruling party. It also criticised the proposed “rainbow coalition” and urged members to remain committed while awaiting a Court of Appeal ruling.
