French investigative journalist Romain Molina says the CAF’s 54 member federations were not consulted before the Confederation announced in December 2025 that the Africa Cup of Nations would be held every four years. He says no general assembly was convened and the federations learned of the decision without prior consultation. According to Molina, only Samuel Eto’o, Fouzi Lekjaa, Souleiman Hassan Waberi and Ahmed Yahya supported the proposal within the CAF Executive Committee, aligning, he alleges, with the interests of Gianni Infantino’s FIFA. CAF reversed the decision on October 29, 2026.
