Zelenskyy to hold talks on the war with Witkoff and European leaders

Volodymyr Zelenskyy is due to meet US envoy Steve Witkoff and the prime ministers of Norway and Finland in Oslo on Tuesday to discuss ending the war with Russia. Jared Kushner is expected to join remotely because of illness. Before the talks, Zelenskyy said he had a constructive conversation with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio about missile interceptors, intelligence sharing and Starlink, but did not say whether Washington would meet Kyiv’s requests. The discussions come as Donald Trump publicly accuses Zelenskyy of not wanting to end the war and both sides continue long-range air attacks.

Janine Lochrenberg, a 65-year-old former nuclear radiographer, died Tuesday after a shark attacked her while she was swimming with a group at Orient Beach in KuGompo, South Africa. Mike Loewe, who was in the water with her, heard her cry; two swimmers and Loewe’s son brought her ashore, where attempts to revive her were made despite severe injuries to her arm and thigh. Police, called to the scene at about 7 a.m., found that she had died, and swimmers reported seeing a shark’s tail and fin. Several nearby beaches were closed and the public was urged to stay out of the water.

More than 250,000 people have been displaced in Yemen since fighting resumed in July, UNHCR says, as clashes between Houthi rebels and forces loyal to the internationally recognised government intensify across several fronts. Taiz is at the centre of the crisis, accounting for 76 percent of departures and hosting 52 percent of newly displaced people; Lahij hosts 23 percent and Aden 13 percent. Shelling, including near homes and health facilities, and restrictions on key routes are hampering aid, while about 33,700 families still need shelter. UNICEF warns that fighting and fuel shortages threaten water systems serving an estimated three million people, including at least 1.6 million children.
