In 1984, IICC Shooting Stars FC of Ibadan was one of the best teams in Africa, reaching the finals of the African Club Championship. Despite a talented squad including Rashidi Yekini and Felix Owolabi, injuries hampered their performance in the decisive match against Zamalek FC. Segun Odegbami, who had an outstanding season, had to play despite a knee injury, affecting his performance. The defeat prevented Odegbami from winning the title of Africa's best player.
