On February 5, 2026, the New START treaty, which governed the nuclear arsenals of the United States and Russia, expired without renewal. Signed in 2010, it imposed limits on the deployment of strategic vectors and nuclear warheads, but tensions arose due to disagreements over arsenal figures. The Covid-19 pandemic and the Russian offensive in Ukraine also contributed to the breakdown of dialogue between the two countries. In February 2023, Vladimir Putin announced the suspension of Russia's participation in the treaty.
