Dakar 2026 Youth Olympics: Amadou Sarang Diallo faces complications over Israel controversy

Amadou Sarang Diallo, a 27-year-old mason living in Nguekhokh, was arrested by Senegal’s Criminal Investigations Division and referred to prosecutors on October 30 after a TikTok video opposing Israeli athletes’ participation in the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games. He said he intended to call for peaceful opposition in response to the situation in Gaza and described his remarks as a communication error, also apologizing for comments about President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and former president Macky Sall. Prosecutors will have to determine whether his statement that the athletes “will not have peace” amounts to a specific threat or a militant slogan; Article 254 provides penalties for publicly insulting the sitting president. Comments about Macky Sall could instead constitute public defamation or insult, and Diallo’s apologies may be considered by the judges.
