The Central Bank of Kenya will now purchase gold extracted within the country before any export, as announced by President William Ruto. The export of raw gold, coltan, and rare earths will be prohibited, with three refineries planned to process local production. This decision follows the suspension of operations by Tata Chemicals Magadi Limited, which exported soda ash. Other African countries, such as Zimbabwe and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, have also taken similar measures to ban the export of raw minerals.
