South African businessman Vusimusi Matlala, a key witness in a police corruption investigation, withdrew from a plea agreement after a court recommended a 12-year prison sentence instead of the initially agreed 8 years. He is accused of bribing senior police officials to win a 360 million rand ($22 million) tender for his health company Medicare24 in 2024. The National Prosecuting Authority says it still has a strong case.
