Africa: Russia warns of the risk of a 'caliphate 2.0'

Tatiana Dovgalenko, head of the Department for Africa at the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, warned on May 27 about the threat of jihadist organizations re-establishing themselves in Africa. She highlighted that the Islamic State is now active on the continent with around 10,000 fighters spread across five provinces. These groups exploit the concept of a caliphate to legitimize their control and administrative activities, posing a threat to Moscow's strategic partnerships in Africa.
