Ten days before Algeria's entry into the 2026 World Cup, the Algerian Football Federation made official the contract extension of Vladimir Petkovic until July 31, 2028. The Swiss coach, who arrived in February 2024, received a salary increase to 150,000 euros per month, a rise of 15,000 euros. Under his leadership, Algeria returned to the World Cup after missing the 2018 and 2022 editions, and reached the quarterfinals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. The set objectives include qualifying for the 2027 AFCON and reaching at least the semifinals of that competition.
