Benin-Niger Border: Les Démocrates Hail Progress Towards Its Reopening

Benin's main opposition party, Les Démocrates, welcomed the creation of a joint committee of Beninese and Nigerien experts tasked with examining the conditions for reopening the common border. This follows a visit by Beninese President Romuald Wadagni to Niamey on June 2, 2026, where he signed a joint communiqué with General Abdourahamane Tiani. The committee, installed on June 5 by Nigerien Prime Minister Ali Mahamane Lamine Zeine, has fifteen days to submit its conclusions. Les Démocrates also highlighted the need to strengthen security cooperation against armed groups active in the region.
