Burkina Faso: African Union Calls for Elections After Transition

The African Union, through its Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, called for the opening of political space and the organization of elections in Burkina Faso after the transition. The AU delegation visited Ouagadougou to meet Captain Ibrahim Traoré, in power since September 2022, as the transition has been extended to 2029 and political parties dissolved in February 2026. Youssouf stressed adherence to the African Charter on Democracy and Elections, urging the reinstatement of parties and the holding of ballots. He also expressed condolences following a jihadist attack in Titao and advocated for rapprochement with ECOWAS.
