The Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (Outa) and the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) have welcomed the cabinet's decision to scrap e-toll debt, though they said the decision should have been made sooner. E-tolls were officially shut down in April 2024 by former Gauteng MEC Lebogang Maile, with total debt estimated at R43 billion. President Cyril Ramaphosa's cabinet approved the write-off, allowing the South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) to eliminate unpaid amounts. Motorists who had paid their tolls will not receive refunds, as confirmed by Minister Khumbudzo Ntshavheni.
