President Paul Biya is set to appoint a vice-president for the first time in four decades following controversial constitutional changes backed by parliament. The position was abolished in 1972. The amendments, criticized by the opposition, grant the president absolute control over the vice president's office, which can only exercise powers delegated by Biya. If the president dies or becomes incapacitated, the vice president will act as interim president.
