French-Iranian author and filmmaker Marjane Satrapi, best known for her autobiographical graphic novel series Persepolis and its Oscar-nominated film adaptation, has died at age 56, the Élysée Palace confirmed. She was an outspoken critic of Iran's government. A close source said she died of sadness a little over a year after the death of her husband, Mattias Ripa. The palace called her a leading figure in French culture and an artist devoted to freedom.
