Central African Republic: Belgian humanitarian released after more than 22 months in detention

Joseph Martin Figueira, a Belgian-Portuguese consultant working for the American NGO FHI 360, was released by Central African authorities after being sentenced to ten years of hard labor for endangering state security. He was arrested in late May 2024 in Zémio while on a mission. In November 2025, he was convicted of complicity in criminal conspiracy due to his alleged contacts with rebel groups in the Haut-Mbomou region.
