Sugar Tax May increase pressure on manufacturers — LCCI

The Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) expressed concern that the proposed Sugar-Sweetened Beverage (SSB) Tax Bill passed by the Nigerian Senate could increase costs for manufacturers and consumers. LCCI Director-General Chinyere Almona noted that manufacturers already face high energy costs, exchange-rate volatility, and weak consumer purchasing power. She advocated for a broader approach including public education campaigns, voluntary product reformulation, and improved labeling. Almona emphasized that the tax framework should be part of a wider public health strategy to minimize disruption to industry and employment.
