Ministry of Health Confirms Second Ebola Death, 7 Contacts Remain in Quarantine

Kenya’s Ministry of Health announced that a 65-year-old woman being treated for Ebola Bundibugyo virus disease in Nairobi had died, bringing the toll to two among nine confirmed cases. Director General of Health Patrick Amoth said she was the country’s third confirmed patient and a close family member of the first patient, who died on October 5; she developed symptoms on October 13 while in quarantine. The seven other patients are receiving care in two isolation facilities, and all nine cases are linked to one cluster, with no evidence of community transmission. Trained teams will arrange a safe, dignified burial, while authorities urge the public to avoid contact with bodily fluids and seek medical care promptly if symptoms develop.

Lead investigator Dr. Hugo Kavunga said the trial aims to evaluate several vaccines and ultimately identify effective protection against this strain. Governor Gaby Kasongo Mulumba urged community leaders to inform residents and counter rumours; a separate study is also examining ERVEBO, developed against the Zaire strain.
