Gunfire heard near Niamey international airport

Gunfire was heard Thursday morning near Niamey international airport. The exchange of fire started around 6:00 a.m. local time and continued for two hours. Residents reported that the shots came from the main entrance of the airport, at a checkpoint. Social media posts mentioned heavy weapons and a large security deployment. This follows a major attack in late January targeting the airport and adjacent military base.
