Electricity: Steelmaker Prometal at the heart of a commercial battle between EDC and Socadel

The government's plan to allow steelmaker Prometal to directly buy electricity from the Memve'élé dam (211 MW) from Electricity Development Corporation (EDC) has drawn opposition from the Cameroon Electricity Company (Socadel). In a letter dated June 8, 2026, Socadel board chairman Antoine Ntsimi asked the Prime Minister to postpone the bilateral contract pending a full assessment of its implications. The power would be transmitted via Sonatrel's network to Prometal's plants in Douala-Bassa.
