Electricity: After a fire, Ghana suspends its exports, affecting Benin

A fire at the Ghana Grid Company Limited substation in Akosombo forced Ghana to suspend its electricity exports to neighboring countries, including Benin, starting April 23, 2026. National demand was reduced by 720 to nearly 1,000 megawatts, impacting the regional supply corridor. Energy Minister John Abdulai Jinapor set a goal to restore the first production unit within 24 hours, while a national audit of energy infrastructure was ordered.
