The federal elections on December 12, 1959, saw high voter turnout in the Northern Region (89.4%), Eastern Region (75.3%), and Western Region (71.2%). All prominent Nigerian political leaders, including Alhaji Tafawa Balewa and Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, were elected. Although the Northern People's Congress secured the most seats, no single party won enough to form a government alone, leading to the establishment of a coalition federal government on December 20, 1959.
