South Africa: at least 12 dead and 9 injured in a shooting

More than a dozen suspects emerged from a minibus and swept through a disadvantaged neighborhood of Johannesburg, shooting at residents during a nighttime attack, killing at least 12 and wounding 9. The mass shooting occurred Tuesday shortly after 11 p.m. in a shantytown in the Cleveland suburb. Provincial police commissioner Tommy Mthombeni said the motive was under investigation, possibly a clash between organized crime gangs over control of illegal mining.
