Despite the government's insistence that the country has enough fuel supply for at least two weeks, several petrol stations in Nairobi and Mombasa have closed or capped the amount of fuel motorists can purchase. Prices have surged to Ksh200 per litre, significantly above the regulated price of Ksh178.28 for petrol. Matatu operators in Kakamega are also reporting shortages, forcing them to travel to the outskirts to find fuel.
