Gunfire erupts in Mogadishu before protests against Somali president’s rule

Former Somali Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire said he was attacked by government forces as he prepared for a peaceful protest in Mogadishu on Wednesday. Gunfire and rocket-propelled grenades erupted in the Howl Wadaag district, causing panic among residents. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud extended his term for one year after it expired on May 15, a move rejected by the opposition and regional leaders. A demonstration is planned for Thursday.
