Trump’s New Press Secretary Leaves Job After Five Days

Katie Zacharia left her job as White House press secretary Friday, just five days after taking the post, following a criticized briefing and revelations about her claims to be a lawyer. Although she has a law degree, she acknowledged failing the bar exam and never retaking it. Donald Trump had suggested she reconsider the job, and damage-control interviews on pro-Trump outlets failed to quell the controversy. Her departure comes as Trump campaigns for Republicans ahead of the November 3 midterms, amid poor poll numbers and public discontent over the war against Iran, inflation and perceptions of corruption.

Police said 160 people were detained on Thursday evening; protesters are demanding Rama’s resignation and electoral and education reforms.

Donald Trump said in Washington on October 16, 2026, that he had advised White House press secretary Katie Zacharia to reconsider her position, five days after she joined the White House. He said the press had treated her “very unfairly” and questioned whether she could be happy in that environment. Appointed on October 9 to succeed Karoline Leavitt, Zacharia gave a 14-minute first briefing that drew widespread criticism, although Trump praised her performance. She also acknowledged that she had never been a licensed lawyer after claiming she had passed China’s bar exam, which foreigners are not permitted to take.
