NECO disowns fake recruitment portals, warns teachers against fraudsters

The National Examinations Council (NECO) has alerted the public about fraudulent recruitment portals claiming to recruit teachers as supervisors for the 2026 SSCE Internal. NECO stated it does not require any payment and that recruitment is done through an official electronic system. About 22,000 supervisors will be recruited for the exam starting June 15, 2026.

Four dead and 24 injured in the derailment of the Warri-Itakpe train in Nigeria

The derailment of the Warri-Itakpe train on June 8, 2026 near Agbor, Delta State, killed four people – two women, one man and an infant – and left 24 seriously injured. The train carried 482 people: 442 passengers and 40 crew, security and service personnel. Rescue operations led by NEMA, FRSC and the Nigerian police concluded at 6:30 p.m. The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has opened an inquiry, and the House of Representatives is demanding compensation for victims.

Cybercrime still hits Nigeria's digital economy hard

Financial institutions in Nigeria lost N52.26 billion to cyber fraud in 2024, up from N17.67 billion in 2023, a 196% increase over five years, according to the NIBSS. In 2025, losses dropped to N25.85 billion and fraud cases fell from 70,111 to 67,518. Four leading banks prevented approximately N14.5 billion in attempted fraud through investments in cybersecurity and AI. Telecom operators and SMEs are also increasingly targeted.
