Benin: World Bank forecasts moderate poverty rate will fall to 34.5% by 2028

The World Bank forecasts that Benin’s moderate poverty rate, measured at the $4.20-a-day threshold, will fall from 39.4% in 2025 to 34.5% in 2028, after reaching 41.1% in 2024. The decline is projected to be gradual, to 36.8% in 2027, supported by average growth of 7.6% in 2027 and 2028, driven by services, construction, industry and agriculture. The bank recommends diversifying agricultural value chains to make the projected progress more sustainable. This projection uses a different measure from the national poverty rate, which stood at 36.2% in 2021–2022, according to Instad.
