Two South African soldiers die chasing illegal miners

Two South African soldiers died on Friday after falling down a mine shaft during an operation targeting illegal miners. The incident occurred at an abandoned mine west of Johannesburg. The soldiers were part of the military deployment ordered by President Cyril Ramaphosa in March to bolster police operations. The illicit miners, known as 'zama zamas', are often linked to organized crime.
