Trinidad and Tobago ends state of emergency amid pushback over mass arrests

The government of Trinidad and Tobago has ended the state of emergency that allowed it to imprison people without charge. Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar announced that the government would not extend this measure but would seek to establish a permanent legal framework to combat crime. Over 5,800 people have been arrested since March, with about 2,250 yet to be charged. Lawsuits against the state are expected from some of those detained.
