Floods in Gaza leave tens of thousands without shelter

Heavy rain and strong winds have flooded 70,000 tents and damaged shelters used by displaced Palestinians across Gaza since late Friday, according to the Government Media Office. Nearly 400,000 people are sheltering in locations considered highly vulnerable to further flooding, while families affected in Deir el-Balah had not received food aid since early Saturday. Gaza’s Civil Defence reported at least 1,500 emergency calls and warned that more than 2,000 buildings are at risk of collapse; it says 300,000 tents are needed for displaced people. The storm caused an estimated $3 million in damage amid severe restrictions on aid supplies.
